DEON MEIRING (1967 - 2019)
Deon Meiring was Professor in Industrial Psychology at the Department of Human Resource Management, University of Pretoria in South Africa. Deon also held an Assistant Professorship extraordinary at the Department of Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

He received his PhD at Tilburg University (2007), the Netherlands, where his promoter was Professor Fons van de Vijver – a leading cross-cultural psychologist.

Deon practised as a Senior Police Psychologist in the South African Police Services (SAPS) for 20 years (1991–2010). His main focus was designing and implementing SAPS selection and assessment practices. In 2001 he developed and implemented the Senior Assessment Centre in SAPS, and designed and executed over 250 assessment centres in various top SAPS management positions. Deon also developed the first physical assessment centre facility in SAPS, financed by the European Union.

Deon Meiring’s association with the SA Assessment Centre Study Group (ACSG) spanned a period of fifteen years. He attended ACSG conferences since 1994 before becoming a committee member (2002–2005) and finally its chairman (2006–2007). He established the Research Focus Area on Assessment Centres in South Africa in 2008. The aim of the Research Focus Area was to provide original, interesting, and rigorous research aimed at a broader scientific understanding of ADCs within both the South African context and the broader international arena. In 2010, he received honorary membership from the Assessment Centre Study Group for his work in the Assessment Centre field in South Africa and his contribution and services towards the ACSG.

Deon leads the Master’s in Industrial Psychology programme at the University of Pretoria (UP). He also developed the UP’s own in-house Assessment Centre facility where students receive their training. Deon has published extensively and has recently contributed towards the book Assessment Centres: Unlocking People Potential for Growth – 2nd Edition edited by Sandra Schlebusch and Gert Roodt.

Deon was an International Affiliate Member of the American Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and an Executive Committee Member of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP).
