The Ethical and Practical Implications of Generative AI in Assessment and Development Centres

Panel Discussion

"Generative AI is transforming the way we approach complex tasks in professional settings, particularly in the field of talent assessment. Grounded in advancements in machine learning and natural language processing, generative AI has the potential to support activities ranging from competency-based evaluations to simulation exercises. However, its use raises critical questions: Is generative AI a skill to be developed, or does its application challenge the ethical boundaries of fair assessment practices?

This session delves into the theoretical foundations of generative AI within the context of assessment centres. Drawing on cognitive load theory, we will examine how AI tools can augment human decision-making by reducing manual effort and enabling a stronger focus on critical thinking. Furthermore, ethical frameworks such as deontological ethics and utilitarianism will be explored to assess the moral implications of utilising AI in tasks traditionally reliant on human expertise.

The session will be structured into two main components. Initially, a panel of 3–4 experts will provide insights into the integration of generative AI in assessment practices, highlighting its potential benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations. This will be followed by facilitated round-table discussions, allowing delegates to engage in smaller group dialogues to share experiences, debate diverse perspectives, and consider the future of generative AI in assessments.

The session will conclude with a summary of key discussion points, presenting actionable insights and recommendations for the responsible use of generative AI within organisational assessment frameworks."

How will the delegates be able to apply your session content back on their job?

Delegates will leave with a nuanced understanding of generative AI as both a skill and an ethical consideration. Additionally, participants will gain practical strategies for effectively incorporating AI into assessment practices, benefiting individuals, organisations, and the broader field of talent management.

What type of tip/tool (e.g., a template, framework, etc.) will you leave the delegates with?

This session aims to provide attendees with the tools and perspectives needed to navigate the evolving landscape of talent assessment in an AI-driven era.

What do you want your audience to know at the end of your presentation and what will the three main points be?

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of whether generative AI represents a new skill to be mastered or a potential ethical challenge in professional contexts. The three main learnings from the session will be:
1. The Ethical and Practical Balance of Generative AI in Assessment Centres.
2. Theoretical Frameworks underpinning generative AI and Practical Implications.
3. Actionable Strategies for Responsible Integration.
